How to Export WhatsApp Voice Messages from a Loved One
Those WhatsApp voice messages hold something irreplaceable. Here's exactly how to save them so their voice can be lovingly recreated.

If you're here, there's likely a WhatsApp conversation on your phone that holds something precious โ voice messages from someone you love, someone whose voice you need to keep safe. Maybe it's a quick "I love you," a rambling story, or just the sound of them laughing at something you said.
Those voice messages aren't automatically backed up in a way that's easy to access later. But the good news: WhatsApp stores voice messages as actual audio files, and you can export them right now. Let's get them saved.
The Fastest Way: Export Directly from the Chat
This method works on both iPhone and Android and takes just a few taps per message.
On iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and navigate to the conversation containing the voice messages
- Find the voice message you want to save
- Tap and hold on the voice message bubble until a menu appears
- Tap Forward (the arrow icon)
- Tap the Share icon in the bottom right corner
- Choose Save to Files to store it in your iCloud Drive or local storage
- Alternatively, select AirDrop to send it directly to your Mac, or choose another app like Voice Memos, Dropbox, or email
The file will be saved as an .opus audio file, which plays on most devices and can be converted to MP3 if needed.
On Android
- Open WhatsApp and go to the conversation with the voice messages
- Long-press on the voice message you want to export
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner
- Select Share
- Choose where to send it: Google Drive, email, Bluetooth, or another app
- To save it directly to your phone's storage, select a file manager app or Save to device if available
Exporting Multiple Voice Messages at Once
If you have many voice messages to save, exporting the entire chat is more efficient than saving them one by one.
Export Full Chat on iPhone
- Open the WhatsApp conversation
- Tap the contact's name at the top to open Chat Info
- Scroll down and tap Export Chat
- When asked, choose Attach Media โ this is essential for including voice messages
- Select where to save or send the export (Files, AirDrop, email, etc.)
You'll receive a folder containing a text transcript of the conversation plus all media files, including every voice message as separate audio files.
Export Full Chat on Android
- Open the conversation in WhatsApp
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top right
- Select More โ Export chat
- Choose Include media
- Select your destination (Google Drive, email, file manager, etc.)
The export creates a .zip file with all voice messages included as individual audio files you can save securely.

Finding Voice Messages in WhatsApp's Local Storage (Android)
Android users have another option: accessing the raw audio files directly from your phone's storage.
- Open your phone's File Manager app
- Navigate to: Internal Storage โ Android โ media โ com.whatsapp โ WhatsApp โ Media โ WhatsApp Voice Notes
- Inside, you'll find folders organized by date
- Voice messages are stored as .opus files โ you can copy these to another location, upload them to cloud storage, or transfer them to your computer
Note: On newer Android versions, this folder may be restricted. If you can't access it through the file manager, the export chat method above is your best alternative.
Backing Up to Your Computer
Once you've exported the voice messages to your phone, getting them onto a computer adds another layer of safety.
From iPhone to Computer
- Using AirDrop (Mac): Share the file via AirDrop directly from WhatsApp
- Using iCloud: Save to Files โ iCloud Drive, then access from iCloud.com or your Mac's Finder
- Using a cable: Connect your iPhone to your computer, open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows), and browse the Files section to locate saved audio
From Android to Computer
- Using a USB cable: Connect your phone, enable file transfer, and navigate to the folder where you saved the exported files
- Using Google Drive: Upload the files from your phone, then download them to your computer
- Using email: Send the files to yourself and download the attachments

Converting .opus Files to MP3
WhatsApp saves voice messages in .opus format, which is high-quality but not universally compatible. If you need MP3 files for broader compatibility:
- On Mac: Use a free tool like VLC Media Player (File โ Convert/Save) or an online converter
- On Windows: VLC works here too, or use Audacity (free audio editor)
- Online: Sites like CloudConvert can convert .opus to .mp3 without installing software โ just be mindful of uploading sensitive audio to third-party sites

Keep Multiple Copies in Different Places
A voice message saved in only one place is still at risk. Once you've exported these files:
- Save to cloud storage (iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox) for automatic backup
- Keep a copy on an external hard drive that stays in a safe place
- Email them to yourself as a simple backup that's always accessible

What You Can Do with These Voice Messages
Once saved, these audio files open up meaningful possibilities. You might create a private playlist of their voice to listen to when you need to feel close to them. Some families compile voice messages into a longer recording to share at a memorial.
And if you have even a short, clear clip โ a few seconds of them speaking naturally โ
that audio can become something you hold in your hands, a keepsake bear that speaks in their voice again whenever you need to hear it.

If You've Already Deleted the Messages
WhatsApp doesn't make recovery easy, but there are a few paths worth trying:
- Check WhatsApp backup: If you have automatic backups enabled (Google Drive on Android, iCloud on iPhone), you may be able to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, then restore from a backup that includes the deleted messages
- Check the other person's phone: If the conversation was with someone else who still has their phone accessible, the messages may still exist on that device
- Look for forwarded copies: Search your other apps and email for any voice messages you may have shared before
For voicemails that have gone missing, our guide on recovering deleted voicemails covers what's possible and what to try first.
You're Doing the Right Thing
Taking time to save these messages โ even when everything feels overwhelming โ is an act of love. These small audio files carry something that photos and text can't capture: the actual sound of someone you love, the rhythm of how they spoke, the warmth in their voice.
Get them saved today. The rest can wait.
